Navigating Major Life Transitions

Every meaningful transition has an unglamorous middle. Knowing that the middle is normal — and how to move through it — changes everything.

New role. New country. New chapter after something ended. Transitions look like single events from the outside and feel like long weather systems from the inside.

Transitions have three parts

The ending. Something real is being given up, even in a change you chose. Naming the loss is not negativity; it is what allows you to stop carrying it.

The middle. This is the part nobody photographs. Old identity gone, new one not yet earned. It is uncomfortable and it is also where the actual work happens.

The beginning. It arrives quietly. Usually you notice it in hindsight — a week where you stopped rehearsing the old version of your life.

What helps in the middle

  1. Shrink the planning horizon. Two weeks, not two years.
  2. Keep two anchors constant — sleep and one relationship. Change everything else if you must.
  3. Write down what you are learning, not just what you are losing.

You are not behind. You are between.

The question worth sitting with

Not "how do I get out of this faster?" but "what is this season asking me to build?" The answer to the second question usually resolves the first.
